WHAT WE OFFER

General Eye Examination

The veterinarians at Animal Eye Care use specialised equipment to examine your animal's eyes. Initially a focal light is used to examine the front of the eyes. A slit lamp biomicroscope is then used to examine the front of the eye under great magnification. A number of specialised tests such as Schirmer Tear testing, application of vital stains, cytology - examination of cells under the microscope, tonometry- measurement of the intraocular pressure, gonioscopy - examination of the drainage, refraction - to see if the patient is short of long sighted may then be used.

Schirmer tear test

The last part of the eye examination involves dilating the pupils. A drop is applied to the eye and the pupil is dilated within 15 minutes to allow a detailed examination of the inside of the eye. This is done with direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Our equipment and specialised training allows a thorough eye examination, much more than general veterinarians are able to offer.

Intraocular pressure check

The initial eye examination and consultation generally takes 30 - 45 minutes. These services are available at our main practice at East Malvern Monday through to Saturday, with a weekly session at the Veterinary School, Werribee, and with our regular clinics in Geelong, Peninsula and Moe. See Find Us for dates and times.

Eye Certification

This test is to check Breeding animals for Inherited Eye Diseases. We are able to provide dog breeders with eye certification with internationally recognized eye certificates. Many eye diseases are inherited, and responsible dog breeders have their breeding dogs checked each year whilst breeding and then a final check after the age of eight years. Such eye examinations can be used to identify inherited eye problems before they are further breed into the dog population.

Animal Eye Care is also able to provide specific information about any breed. This information is gained from our own records, and from discussion with our colleagues from around the world.

Horses

Horses can be seen in floats at the practice, or preferably in the Veterinary Hospital at the nearby Caulfield Racecourse, or at the Cranbourne Equine Hospital or the Veterinary School, Werribee. To make an appointment for a horse please contact Animal Eye Care on 03 9563 6488.

Surgery

Surgery is available only at the clinic in East Malvern. All animals must have an initial consultation before surgery.

With the aid of an operating microscope we are able to provide your pet with the most modern most modern surgical techniques which are required for delicate eye surgery.

Ophthalmology Only

At Animal Eye Care our clinic is equipped for ophthalmology only. For all other veterinary services we refer you back to your local veterinarian.
