WHAT
WE OFFER
General
Eye Examination
The veterinarians
at Animal Eye Care use specialised equipment to examine your animal's
eyes. Initially a focal light is used to examine the front of the
eyes. A slit lamp biomicroscope is then used to examine the front
of the eye under greater magnification. A number of specialised
tests such as Schirmer Tear testing, application of vital stains,
cytology - examination of cells under the microscope, tonometry-
measurement of the intraocular pressure, gonioscopy - examination
of the drainage, refraction - to see if the patient is short of
long sighted may then be used.
The last part
of the eye examination involves dilating the pupils. A drop is applied
to the eye and the pupil is dilated within 15 minutes to allow a
detailed examination of the inside of the eye. This is done with
direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Our equipment and specialised
training allows a thorough eye examination, much more than general
veterinarians are able to offer.
The initial
eye examination and consultation generally takes 30 - 45 minutes.
These services are available at our main practice at East Malvern
Monday through to Saturday, with weekly sessions at Point Cook and
Essendon's Animal Accident and Emergency Centers, as well as regular
clinics in Geelong, Mornington Peninsula (Frankston) and Moe. See

for dates.
Eye
Certification for Breeding Dogs
This test is
to check Breeding animals for Inherited Eye Diseases. We are able
to provide dog breeders with eye certification with internationally
recognised eye certificates. Many eye diseases are inherited, and
responsible dog breeders have their breeding dogs checked each year
whilst breeding and then a final check after the age of eight years.
Such eye examinations can be used to identify inherited eye problems
before they are further bred into the dog population. Please visit
our 'Breed
Condition' page for further information.
Animal Eye Care
is also able to provide specific information about any breed. This
information is gained from our own records, and from discussion
with our colleagues from around the world. Please view the 'Breeders'
section of the site
DNA
Testing
We can now take
DNA swabs to be tested for some hereditary eye diseases in selected
breeds. Please note that only some types of PRA can be test for
genetically, and annual ANKC-ACES examinations are still highly
recommended. Please visit our 'Eye
Scheme' page for helpful links to learn more.
Horses
Horses can be
seen in floats at the practice, or preferably at the nearby Caulfield
Racecourse or the Veterinary School, Werribee. To make an appointment
for a horse please contact Animal Eye Care on 03 9563 6488. The
costs for horse consultations are higher than for regular clinic
consultations.
Surgery
Surgery is available
only at the clinic in East Malvern. All animals must have an initial
consultation before any surgery. With the aid of an operating microscope,
specialised microsurgical experience and our long experience dealing
with eye problems, we are able to provide your pet with the best
possible surgical techniques which are required for delicate eye
surgery. Please visit 'Your
Pet and Eye Surgery' page.

At Animal Eye
Care our clinic is equipped for ophthalmology only. For all other
veterinary services we refer you back to your local veterinarian.
We are unable to supply medications or treatments for general problems,
