Surgical Procedures

Surgery is available at the East Malvern clinic. All animals require an initial consultation before any surgery. This can be organised on the same day, especially for those clients travelling from country Victoria or beyond.

Ophthalmic veterinary surgery is highly exacting and requires years of training. We are often working a the level of a fraction of a millimeter and with delicate instrument and sutures (some less than the width of a human hair). Almost all surgeries are performed with the aid of an operating microscope. All patients have an intravenous catheter placed prior to surgery and are on iv fluids before, during and after surgery. Your pet is monitored throughout surgery for oxygen saturation, end-tidal CO2, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and ECG. This is done by a nurse dedicated to looking after your pet throughout the procedure.

We do not routinely require biochemistry and haematology for healthy patients however we will ask your veterinarian to perform these tests prior to surgery if your pet is unwell or over 8 years old.

Surgical procedures performed include:

  • Cataract surgery (phacoemulsification)

  • Eyelid surgery – entropion, ectropion, eyelid tacking for puppies, tumour removal, eyelid remodelling for feline eyelid agenesis or traumatic injuries.

  • Corneal surgery – conjunctival pedicle grafts, corneoconjunctival sliding grafts, corneal laceration repair, corneal ulcer repair, feline sequestrum remova

  • Lens surgery – cataract removal and intraocular lens replacement, luxated lens removal, phacoemulsification for rabbit lenses with E. cunicul

  • Iris surgery – laser abalation of iris tumours or suspect iris pigmentation

  • Tear duct surgery – flushing of blocked tear ducts, opening of aplastic tear duct openings (tear duct atresia)

  • Glaucoma surgery – diode laser destruction of some of the fluid producing cells in the ciliary body
